Their gliding abilities allow them to stay airborne without flapping for hours. The bird looks like a gull, with similar plumage. And, in fact, even the temperament of the albatross on land can be compared to the gull. One nickname for the bird, mollymawk, is Dutch for “foolish gull.” The Northern Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Head in New Zealand has more than forty thousand sightseers annually.
