Jacques Plante: The Mask
In a game between goalie Jacques Plante’s Canadiens and the New York Rangers on November 1, 1959, Plante’s nose was broken when he was hit by a shot. Finally convincing Canadiens coach Toe Blake that he should play with a mask, the goaltender made history when he skated back onto the ice and became the first NHL goalie to wear a mask during a regulation game. Despite his game changing contribution, Plante was ridiculed for donning the mask, until finally it became the norm in the NHL. In this video, WatchMojo.com speaks with with Plante biographer Todd Denault to learn more about how Plante changed the face of the hockey.
