How to Replace Windshield Wiper Blades
Although seemingly easy, the simple task of replacing your windshield wiper blades can be very difficult and frustrating, especially the first time.
The windshield wiper blade includes both the rubber wiper, as well as the branch to which it is attached. It is best to replace this whole piece, as opposed to just the rubber wipers. To start, find what model of wiper blade to purchase by looking in the reference books where blades are sold.
In the package containing your new windshield wiper blades, you should find three or four different styles of blade attachments. That’s the small plastic piece that attaches the new blade to the wiper arm. This piece is found where the arm and blade meet. Verify which type is currently being used on your car, and find the new one that matches it for use.
Pull the wiper and arm away from the car, so that it is sticking out perpendicular to the windshield. Be careful not to let the wiper arm snap back to the windshield while it has no blade attached – this could crack the windshield.
Now, to remove the wiper from the arm. There are various different styles of wiper blades. For example, where the blade and arm meet, there might be a small tab you can depress with a screwdriver to ease removal of the wiper. Remove this attachment from the blade and attach the new one.
Mount the blade onto the windshield wiper arm, and put the arm back into place.
Test your work by turning on the wipers. The blades should not slip, and if that is the case, you may need to reattach them more firmly. Now, you should be ready to roll in the rain!
