The History of the Indianapolis 500 Auto Race The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in 1909, and the Indy 500 auto race debuted just two years later on May 30, 1911. Popular since its debut, this race is now one of the fastest and most popular races in the auto world. The Indy 500 is full of traditions, with winners drinking milk in Victory Lane and kissing the bricks on the speedway to honor its history. The track has remained relatively unchanged since it was first built, except it has been resurfaced. However the race itself has evolved with the times. In this video, WatchMojo.com learns more about the history of the Indianapolis 500.
