Supervillain Origins: Loki

He is the Asgardian God of Mischief, adopted brother of Thor, and the force that spurred the creation of The Avengers. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we will be examining the origins of Loki.

As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginings and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline, which unfolded in “Thor: Son of Asgard”, “Journey into Mystery” #85 and “The Avengers” #1.

Originally the son of the Frost Giant Laufey, Loki was adopted as an infant by the god Odin, following his father’s defeat. Unusually small in stature, he had been hidden in shame by the Giant King, due to being nearly the same size as an Asgard.

Growing up, he quickly developed into a mischievous child, filled with jealousy over the affection shown to his older brother Thor.

Within Asgardian society, the greatest values included great strength, tenacity and bravery above all else. Because of this, Loki was inferior in every way, and chose to study magic and science.

At this time he pulled a variety of mean-spirited stunts against his brother. These included cutting the gorgeous blonde hair from his girlfriend, and causing it to only grow back pitch black.

Eventually becoming one of the strongest sorcerers in the Asgard realm, he used his powers to pursue the goal of becoming the mightiest god alive, and to cause the death of Thor.

With his natural talent for misbehavior becoming apparent, he soon became widely known as ‘The God of Lies and Mischief.” However, instead of playing harmless pranks on those around him, he became malicious and his lust for power and revenge became insatiable.

As a result, Odin trapped Loki within a tree, which would be a prison until someone shed a tear for him. Without anyone to miss him, he used magic to free himself by causing a leaf to strike Heindell, the guardian of Bitfrost in the eye.

Following his release, he was exiled from Asgard and allied himself with dwarfs, trolls and demons. With their help, he continued to terrorize Thor and attempt to steal Mjolnir, his enchanted hammer.

Eventually, Loki’s schemes reached all the way to Earth, prompting superheroes to gather as The Avengers in defense of the planet, who allied themselves with the god Thor.

The first enemy of the Avengers, Loki has been a popular villain of Marvel comics since the early 1960s, and finally made his big screen appearance in 2011’s Thor and 2012’s film adaptation of The Avengers.
