Video Game Classics: Zelda II The Adventure of Link

Some games will live forever as Classics. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link.

Released in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, this is one of several Nintendo sequels that took a drastic departure from its predecessor.

Created by a different development team at Nintendo, The Adventure of Link was focused on a combination of several elements to create an action-RPG experience unlike any other before it. Despite the shock of the major changes, it still managed to become a smash hit, adding its own additions to the series, and challenging puzzles.

Set once again in the fantasy world of Hyrule, the story picks up several years following Link’s defeat of the evil wizard Ganon, when Link discovers a slumbering princess that has only been mentioned in legend. Kept a secret in the Northern Castle, Link must quest to awaken her from the spell that has kept her asleep for centuries.

To accomplish this, the green-clad hero must place a crystal within the six castles scattered throughout Hyrule. Doing so will unlock the Great Palace, and reveal the powerful Triforce of Courage.

But it is not an easy quest. The followers of Ganon have begun skewering the land in search of Link, requiring his blood to resurrect their fallen master.

A one of a kind quest within the Zelda series, The Adventure of Link is focused on a two-world gameplay dynamic. This is made up of a side-scrolling perspective, while travel between major map locations is presented through an over-world map.

Displayed from a top-down perspective, players must use this hub screen to make their way to different dungeons, towns, and conduct combat with enemies.

Once again armed with his sword and shield, Link can now battle by attacking while crouched, and strike while jumping to perform downward and upward midair stabs.
Adding to this advanced combat is the need to learn magic spells, which are acquired from wise men throughout the towns. Finding them, they will grant you new abilities necessary for advancing beyond key points in the game.

On top of all these changes is your ability to accumulate experience points. These increases function to bolster your attack, magic and life bars.

Despite the many welcome additions to the sequel, it unfortunately debuted without the revolutionary save system contained within its predecessor.

Re-released several times for the various Nintendo systems, it has recently become available for Nintendo’s Virtual console. And while The Adventure of Link has come to be considered the black sheep of the Zelda franchise, it remains a unique and enjoyable gaming experience that should not be missed.
