The 83rd Academy Awards Recap
It was an award ceremony that saw “The King’s Speech” defeat “The Social Network” and Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.” Welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we’ll be recapping the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.
The star-studded 2010 Ceremony took center stage on February 27th, 2011 at the Kodak theatre in Hollywood, California. Seeking to achieve greater viewership than usual, the event was not only highly publicized on social media, such as Twitter, but was co-hosted by the young actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Together, the duo presented the 10 films for Best Picture. These included “127 Hours”. “Black Swan”, “The Fighter”, Inception”, The Kids are All Right”, “The Social Network”, “Toy Story 3”, True Grit”, “Winter’s Bone” and The King’s Speech.”
While “The Social Network” had equal momentum leading up to the event, the “The King’s Speech” swept all 4 major categories. These included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay.
Despite this, all was not lost for “The Social Network”, firmly securing wins in the categories of Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Film Editing.
And while Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was enormously praised, it was Colin Firth’s powerhouse presentation of a stuttering royal that secured the Oscar for Best Actor in a Lead Role.
Meanwhile, Christian Bale courteously won best supporting Actor for his role as former professional boxer Dicky Eklund in “The Fighter.”
In the category of Best Actress, Natalie Portman was recognized for the role of Nina Sayers in “Black Swan”, handily defeating Nicole Kidman, who was nominated for “Rabbit Hole.”
The Best Supporting Actress award went to newcomer Melissa Leo for her part as Alice Ward in “The Fighter.” But that wasn't the only honor the actress walked away with, she also had the honor of being the only winner of the night to drop the F-Bomb during her acceptance speech.
In the other major film categories, “Inception” cleaned up in the technical categories. These included Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
At the same time, Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” easily defeated the competition to receive an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. “Inside Job” was hailed as the Best Documentary Feature. “Strangers No More” won best documentary Short, “In A Better World” from Denmark won Best Foreign Language Film, “The Lost Thing” won for Best Short Animated Film, and “God of Love” took home an Oscar for Best Short Live Action Film.
Picking up the remaining golden statues were “Alice in Wonderland” for Best Costume Design and Art Direction, while the “The Wolfman” for Best Makeup.
