Victor Peña is an unenthusiastic, bookish soldier in a war in 1980s El Salvador. During his time in a clandestine torture troop, he is forced to participate in torturing a young female prisoner. Before even learning her name, these soldiers break the woman – body, mind and soul – and inflict unimaginable atrocities. Victor is struck by the prisoner – Lorca – and her bravery. By chance, both escape the war to New York City where Victor wishes to find Lorca to atone for his sins and prove to himself that he, too, is brave.
