Top 5 Things You Didn't Know About Tom Holland

You may know him as the newest Spider Man, but there’s a lot more to him than that. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 5 Things You Didn't Know About Tom Holland.

For this list, we’re looking at some fun facts about “Spider-Man” actor Tom Holland.

#5: He Was Born in London
Because Tom Holland has done such a convincing job with his American accent in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” fans may not realize that he’s actually British. He was born on June 1st, 1996 in the southwest area of London called Kingston upon Thames. He comes from an artistic family, with his mother working as a photographer and his father a comedian and author. Holland won’t be the first Brit to play the iconic role; Andrew Garfield also hails from England but pulled off the American accent in the 2012 flick “The Amazing Spider-Man” and it’s 2014 sequel.

#4: He Rolls with the Big Dogs!

While Tom may be a fresh face in Hollywood, he already has some pretty serious credentials under his belt. Many will call 2017’s “Spider-Man” his breakout role, but he had a pretty important part in 2012’s “The Impossible” where he starred alongside Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. After the film was released, Holland was awarded Breakthrough Performance - Male by the National Board of Review. He also had a part in 2015’s “In the Heart of the Sea” where he worked with Thor, uh, we mean Chris Hemsworth.

#3: He's Always Been a Spider-Man Fan

Like most kids Tom Holland went through a superhero phase, but unlike most people he’s living his dream by playing one. His mom saved one of his childhood Spider-Man shirts as evidence that he was destined for the role. Now, Holland is giving back to other young fans of this web slinging superhero by visiting children’s hospitals in costume, and giving them the chance to meet the real live Spider-Man.

#2: He's the Youngest to Take on the Role

While Peter Parker has been depicted as a high school student in all of the modern “Spider-Man” films, typically the actors have been significantly older than the character. Tobey Maguire was 27 when “Spider-Man” was released in 2002 and Andrew Garfield was 29 year old when “The Amazing Spider-Man” came out in 2012. Tom Holland on the other hand, is significantly closer in age to the high-school spidey he’s playing, at just 21. This will make “Homecoming” feel more believable, as Hollywood as a tendency to pick older actors for younger parts.

#1: His Background Is in Musical Theatre & Amateur Stunts

Tom has been dancing from a young age, starting with hip hop classes taken at the “Nifty Feet Dance School.” In 2006, while he was performing with the school, he was scouted by a choreographer named Lynne Page who was affiliated with “Billy Elliot: The Musical.” After many auditions and years of training, Holland finally made his stage debut as Billy’s best friend Michael, but was soon cast in the play’s titular role. He even credits this experience with preparing him to play Spider-Man. He’s got some serious moves, and isn’t afraid to show them off on social media either.
