Get ready, world, Netflix is dropping a hot new comedy series about an all-female pro wrestling league set in the 1980s. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 3 Facts About GLOW.

For this list, we’ll be taking a look at some fun facts related to the Netflix series “GLOW,” which premiers on June 23rd, 2017.

#3: It’s from the Minds Behind “Orange Is the New Black”

If you haven’t heard of “OITNB,” we suggest you get binging; not only is it one of the most successful Netflix original series, it’s also one of the best female-led shows in recent memory. Lucky for us, series’ creator Jenji Kohan, along with team members Tara Herrmann and Carly Mensch, have set their sights on a new project: “GLOW.” And joining them will be Liz Flahive, who’s worked on both “Nurse Jackie” and “Homeland.” With this talented foursome at the helm, this new series is dripping in comedic potential. Seriously, who wouldn’t wanna watch a show about female wrestlers in the ‘80s?

#2: The Cast Is Made Up Almost Entirely of Women

In keeping with the trend set by “Orange Is the New Black”, the cast of “GLOW” is primarily comprised of lovely ladies. Beginning with star Alison Brie, the show promises to have quite the talented ensemble. “Nurse Jackie” alum Betty Gilpin, Sunita Mani of “Mr. Robot,” and Ellen Wong of “Scott Pilgrim” fame are also part of the team, alongside singers like Kate Nash, Jackie Tohn, and actual pro-wrestler Kia Stevens. While “GLOW” will feature some male actors – like Marc Maron as Sam Sylvia – it will no doubt be women dominating the storylines and driving the plot forward.

#1: It’s Inspired by a True Story

If you weren’t already excited by this promising new series, then this should nudge you in the right direction. “GLOW” is based on a real all-female pro-wrestling federation, called the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, that transformed actresses, models and other entertainers into big-haired wrestlers. These gals performed outlandish sketches and raps while wearing tight spandex outfits. If that didn’t give you a clue, the show began in the mid-eighties, and was inspired by the WWF. If you’re looking for a little more information related to this unique – and frankly, totally awesome – phenomenon, then check out the documentary “GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.” Otherwise, circle June 23rd on your calendar!
