#3: Oscar Milestones

Damien Chazelle faced tough competition in Barry Jenkins and Kenneth Lonergan, but the La La Land filmmaker made Oscar history, becoming the youngest person ever to win Best Director at the age of 32. The previous youngest director? Norman Taurog, who was 222 days older after winning in 1931. The Supporting Actor categories went according to predictions, but didn’t stop many cinephiles from celebrating both Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis’ well-deserved Oscars, marking the first time that two black actors won supporting awards in the same year. The awards are Oscar firsts for Ali and Davis, who won for their roles in Moonlight and Fences. Davis also became the first black actress to win an Academy Award, Emmy and Tony award, which is only a Grammy away from the prestigious EGOT, while Ali also became the first Muslim to win an Oscar.

#2: The Lead Acting Categories

Emma Stone capped off awards season the same way she started it; with a trophy. The La La Land actress kept her win streak alive and won the Oscar for Best Actress. The first-time Academy Award winner beat out actresses like Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman and Meryl Streep, who was nominated for a record 20th time. In what was viewed as one of the most competitive categories of the night, Casey Affleck prevailed as the winner of the Best Actor Award. Affleck’s turn as a guilt-riddled divorcé in the critically acclaimed Manchester by the Sea was enough to beat out Denzel Washington’s loud and brash Troy Maxson of Fences. Denzel’s loss marks the first time in 12 years that the winner of the SAG award did not go on to win the Oscar.

Before we get to our final story, check out these other Oscar winners:

Makeup and Hairstyling - Suicide Squad
Sound Editing - Arrival
Sound Mixing - Hacksaw Ridge
Best Adapted Screenplay - Moonlight
Best Original Screenplay - Manchester by the Sea

#1: Best Picture Drama

No, that isn’t the name of a category at the Academy Awards. There literally was all sorts of drama when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway pulled a Steve Harvey and incorrectly announced that La La Land was the Best Picture winner [What? Come on!]. The whole La La Land team came on stage to accept the award when a noticeable commotion was going on in the background. It was then that the audience was told by La La Land producer, Jordan Horowitz that Beatty was given the wrong envelope and that Moonlight was the real Best Picture winner. After the stunned crowd came to, they started applauding Director Barry Jenkins and his team, acknowledging the importance of the social and cultural messages Moonlight brought to audiences amidst controversial and turbulent times.
