Inversion: Everything You Should Know

Down is the new up! Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be exploring everything you should know about Inversion.

Developed by Saber Interactive and published by Namco Bandai Games, Inversion is a third person shooter set in the near future. Its story takes place after humanity has finally achieved world peace, and has come under the gaze of a hostile alien race called the Lutadores.

Descending on Earth, the aliens begin a full on invasion, wielding gravity-shifting weapons to decimate the planet’s defenses. Their arrival has likewise caused the appearance of mysterious anomalies that have made random sections of Earth cities take on unstable and unpredictable gravity fluctuations.

Caught up in the fight to reclaim the planet is an everyday police officer named Davis Russel. With his partner Leo, they make their way across the twisted cityscape, on a mission to gather recon and find Russel’s daughter. This leads them to steal the alien’s arm-mounted Grav-Link devices, and fight gravity with gravity.

Characters and story aside, the real star in Inversion is Sabre’s use of the Havok physics engine. While you will be forced to find cover when the bullets start flying, obvious comparisons to games like Gears of War become less prominent as soon as the world around you begins to alter, fights shift vectors, and you must navigate in zero gravity.

To dispatch the alien invaders, Russel and Leo not only make use of a wide arsenal of human and alien weaponry, but must also use bursts of low or high gravity to their advantage through the Grav-Link tool, which requires colour coded energy packs.

Interestingly, low gravity is used to do such things as pull enemies away from cover, use objects as weapons, solve environmental puzzles and form new paths. Meanwhile, high gravity can pin enemies to the ground so you can blow them away, drop enemies through floors, and pull down rubble to form cover. Basically, it does more than the Gravity gun from Half Life and you may start to feel like a Jedi.

Shockingly, enemies can use many of the same tricks on you as well, causing you to float about helplessly with a well-aimed shot! Because of this, the gameplay possibilities are endless, and the physics engine allows for some of the most insane and spectacular sights ever attempted in a video game. Trust us, there’s nothing like suddenly scaling a building or having the ceiling suddenly become the floor while enemies descend on you from all angles.
Likewise, the inclusion of full on cooperative play makes this a game you’ll definitely want to pick up and play with buddy. If you have no one to play with, the computer will fill in your partner’s shoes with a serviceable AI bot.

As far as replay value is concerned, Inversion features a survival mode and many multiplayer options that will have you battle through several forms of deathmatch and team death match, while shifting gravity on your opponents for extra points and breathtaking kills. These include unique spins on familiar scenarios, such as Gravity Slaughter and King of Gravity, which are just as fun as they sound!

Inversion may borrow tricks from the competition, but it is easily one of the most ambitious shooters to hit the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in a long time. For more information on other hit video games, be sure to check us out at WatchMojo.com!
