Born in western Libya in 1942, Muammar Gaddafi was influenced by the Arab nationalist movement while he was a student. After participating in the movement to overthrow the monarchy, Gaddafi became leader of Libya. His strong personality and forceful rule antagonized the western world. Though relations with the west improved, conditions in Libya worsened.
