Benito Mussolini started life as a devout socialist, like his father. He joined the party early on and became a popular member of the group. However, Mussolini broke with the party when he supported Italian intervention in World War I, and this got him ejected from the Socialist Party. This party eventually became the National Fascist Party, and through them Mussolini came to become the most powerful man in Italy.
