The Republic of Singapore is a city-state
on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.
To its north is the Malaysian state
of Johor, to its south is the Indonesian
Riau Islands. Singapore sites some
137 km north of the Equator. Over
the years, the city-state has gone
from a Malay settlement to a British
trading post. Over time, Singapore
became a considerable commercial and
military imperial base. During World
War II, Japan occupied the city. In
1963, it declared independence from
Britain, only to briefly join the
Federation of Malaysia until they
were booted from the federation.
Tourists
know the city mainly for not allowing
to chew gum, or the heavy fines imposed
on things like littering, spitting
or the failure to flush public toilets.
All in all, despite or due to all
of these factors, Singapore is one
of the least corrupt states in the
World.
