Jakarta formerly known as Batavia and Jayakarta is the capital and the largest city in Indonesia. Jakarta is split up into 5 “cities” and the entire area has a population of over 8 million people. Because it is the political and economic capital of the country it has many foreign immigrants and the city is very cosmopolitan with a diverse culture. It is the home of many Universities.  There is a large Chinese community in the city and some estimates put about 10% of the population from Chinese descent.  Because of the rapid population growth and the government’s inability to keep up, there are numerous problems in the city including over population and insane traffic jams.
