:\|: What they did before the Stanley Cup While 1926 was the year the National Hockey League assumed control of the Stanley Cup, it has a very deep history before then. It was originally given to the top amateur team in Canada. League champions would challenge the team with the cup. This format continued until 1915 when the National Hockey Association and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association reached an agreement to have their respective league champions compete for the cup. By 1926, the NHL had adopted the Stanley Cup as its championship trophy.


:\|: The Stanley Cup: Origins, Background and History Donated by Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada in 1892, the Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes. The NHL Stanley Cup is the only major North American sports trophy (besides the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup) that is not remade each season. Each year the NHL champion has to return the trophy. However, each member of the team, whether it be player or management has their name engraved on the trophy. It is interesting to note that hockey legends like Jacques Plante and Bob Gainey have their names misspelled on the trophy. In fact, Plante's name was incorrectly engraved five times. The Stanley Cup has been many places and seen many things; a short list includes: - an attempt to be drop kicked across the Rideau Canal in 1905. - being urinated in by Red Kelly's son in 1964. - taken to a strip club to be drank out of by fans in 1988 with Mark Messier. - tossed into both Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy's pools in 1991 and 1993. - used as a dish to serve oats to the Kentucky Derby winner at the time.


:\|: Road to the Stanley Cup At the end of an 82-game regular season, 16 teams (eight from each conference) attend the NHL playoffs. All series in the NHL Playoffs are determined by a best-of-seven series. Round One faces off the first ranked team versus the eighth, second versus seventh and so on. After another round like that, the Conference Championship series determines which teams from each side will meet for the Stanley Cup. For each round, the team with the best regular season record receives home-ice advantage.


:\|: Trivia and Interesting Facts - Oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes. - Each winning player and team management member gets to take the Cup home for a day to share with family and friend. - Is the only trophy in professional sports that has the names of winning players, coaches, management and club staff engraved on it. - The Stanley Cup was actually crafted in Sheffield, England. - In 1905, a team from Yukon traveled for over 20 days by dogsled and train to compete a team from Ottawa.
