Tutoring
And Teacher's Assistants
Follow The Example
Whether you are having
difficulty with a particular class or simply
need to fine-tune some things going into
an exam, tutors and teachers assistants
are always present and available on campus.
The larger the classroom, the greater the
need to tap into the brains and experience
of a tutor and see what advice, tips and
guidance these have to offer.
In private, find out about
their professors, which classes they recommend
that you take and which ones you should
avoid. How were their exams and how did
they perform? How did they get into tutoring?
What do they think of the faculty and the
administration? Ask them how your school
fares against the competition.
Lead By Example
Students that excel in
their studies should also consider becoming
tutors and or teachers' assistants. Tutoring
offers valuable experience in public speaking,
problem solving skills and effective communication.
These are very important in business with
board meetings, group discussions, labor
meetings and every time that your audience
is not on your side. Students do not care
that you are not a professor; you are there
so they will test you. This will test how
agile you are on your feet in front of an
audience.
Some of you may like it
for the entertainment. Consider tutoring
business like the ultimate comedy hour:
Chris Rock meets Warren
Buffett.
You will be prompted to
share your know-how when you start to work.
Doing so in a simple manner like tutorials
is great batting practice for the real thing.
There is nothing more frustrating in a class
when you have an employee who does not share
information. There is also nothing more
ineffective than confusing others or wasting
their time. Tutoring teaches you how to
retain audience attention, share key data
and do so in an effective timeline.
''Your'' students will
constitute potential colleagues, employees,
rivals and even bosses. Imagine if one of
your students turns out to become a venture
capitalist that may determine whether or
not your entrepreneurial endeavor will receive
financing. Someone you help today may end
up helping you make your dreams come true.
Your former students will remember your
unselfishness, smarts and showmanship.
The other side of tutoring
is that you forge strong ties with faculty
and get a sense of the management (and mismanagement)
in education.
This is also when you get
a sneak preview of the politics in an institution.
You see what happens when student needs
are not met and their concerns are seen
as burdens by the school. At times, what
is best for students becomes secondary to
faculty power struggles, turf battles, jealousy
and envy.
No one said business was
pretty – business
school is no different. |
