Being
Your Own Person: Stepping
Out Of Someone's Shadow
Big
Brother's Shoes
After
winning Championships for the Benetton racing
team in the 1990s, Michael Schumacher switched
to Ferrari for a cool $25 million. Within
a couple of years, Schumacher began to dominate
the Formula 1 circuit as never before.
A
couple of years later younger brother Ralf
made his entry into Formula 1. Being the
younger brother of the world's greatest
racecar driver was not easy, but unlike
Villeneuve who was never comfortable in
his father's shadow, Ralf Schumacher never
hid his respect, admiration and emulation
for his older brother. By the time that
Williams BMW lured Ralf, the younger Schumacher
had blazed his own trail in Formula 1.
The
lesson is that Zakk Wylde, Jacques Villeneuve
and Ralf Schumacher all had big, stinkin'
shoes to fill. The shoes were big in terms
of accomplishments and stinkin' in terms
of them being hard to ignore. They all managed
to fill them splendidly by doing what felt
comfortable. You too may have big stinkin'
shoes to fill, so start smelling the roses
and just do what feels natural. The rest
will fall in place.
