Problems

Marketing

The trick is to view industry as sport, a company as a team and individuals as athletes. At this point, it becomes easy to follow and understand. The most important thing for marketing students to do in the studying process is to stay on top of what is happening in the business world. Which companies are leaders in market share? Which ones convert market leadership into high sales? What about profitability? Is a company delivering superior products to new markets or is it slashing costs to gain market share? Did the company launch a new advertising campaign that is working?

The idea here is that while textbooks will teach you the lingo and theory behind marketing objectives and goals, they do very little to explain the business world. Business magazines help to bridge the gap. Pick up any magazine and see how much of the terms you understand. When you read about strategies that worked or failed, is it clear to you why? The more you read, watch business news programs, the more you will be on top of matters and stand out in class and in exams. After all, if every student is writing on definitions and theories and you come out and explain why a certain company beat a competitor, you are now head and shoulders above the class. Popular examples are the Cola Wars between Coca-Cola and Pepsi Co., the computer industry with Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Dell and for some reason, everything surrounding Procter & Gamble.
