Conflict between Vice-President / Coach

In the military, mutiny can lead to a discharge. In sports, having a coach lobby for the General Manager position to the team President can lead to dismissal. Butch Carter did this as coach of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Toronto Raptors when he tried to usurp GM Glen Grunwald's position. He was subsequently fired and Grunwald went on to build upon Carter's foundation. The stigma that was attached to Carter did not leave.

True, some professional athletes and coaches may have their own set of laws, but you are an amateur. This is why it is important to think twice about whom you choose as mentors and whom you view as an ally. If someone takes you under their wing, they may expect you to follow their lead and not side with their rivals – or try to steal their thunder.

Be careful when you ask for advice. You should think twice before going against what is suggested to you. You are free to do as you wish, but doing so may burn bridges and turn the advisor off. Debate is positive, dissent rarely is. It leads to mutiny or a discharge. Neither looks good on your résumé. Lose strong and powerful allies and doors will slam shut before you can ask "how high should I jump?"
