Seizing The Moment

Professors can make great mentors for those who seek to study after they complete a Bachelor's. Master's students need their support while Doctorate students rely on the mentorship, tutelage and guidance of someone that has walked the path before.

When things are said and done, mentors may point you in the right direction but they will not get the job done for you. As a result, you must remain in control of your destiny and do what feels right for you.

When the time comes to go in your own direction, remain grateful but avoid feeling forever indebted. At some point, we all have to cut the umbilical chord – the key is to remain cordial.

Students

Regardless of whether you are the type to hang out at school during your break or bolt out of class to leave campus, you will come across some great people at college. The first week of the term is when you should make friends and establish contacts. While professors change course outlines, alter dates and make important announcements, confusion reigns in and out of the classroom. As a result, you should approach fellow students and break the ice. Some of the best connections are made this way.

Out With The Old, In With The New

It may be difficult to adjust to so many new faces, but remember that you are no longer in high school. It is imperative to acknowledge your reality and evolve with it.

Business is all about change: changes in environment, dynamics and stimuli. Companies like personnel who move with the times, so the sooner you become an agent of change, the better.

The first front on which you will experience change is with people. You will interact with some who will become friends, others who will not. Imagine you start a new job and choose to stay friends only with colleagues from your old job: is that healthy? Now imagine you get a transfer to a new department: would you snub your new colleagues? Finally, imagine you are an athlete who gets traded to a new team: do you maintain contact with your old teammates? Of course, but you must make connections with your new teammates as well.

Change is a fact of life, so get used to it.
