Born Gordon Matthew Sumner, Sting played in a number of jazz bands including Phoenix Jazzmen, where he most likely picked up his nickname. During one performance, he wore a black and yellow striped jersey and fellow band member Gordon Solomon had said that he looked like a bumblebee.

It was in 1977 that, along with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, the band The Police was formed. They had several hits and won six Grammy Awards in the early 80’s. Their biggest hit may well be the song Every Breath You Take. The alst album the group released was in 1983.

Sting released his first solo album in 1985 and it included the hit If You Love Somebody Set Them Free. The album reached triple platinum.

Since, he has continued to release successful album after successful album. In June 2002, he was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In March 203, The Police was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in the same summer, he was made Commander in the Order of the British Empire.
