Paul McCartney was invited to join John Lennon’s band the Quarrymen in 1957 and were eventually joined by Ringo Starr and George Harrison and the Beatles came to be.

While he was initially asked to join the band as a guitarist, he went on to take over the duties of bassist in the early 60’s, replacing the original bass player Stuart Sutcliffe.

McCartney and Lennon wrote most of the songs for the band including the classics A Hard Day’s Night, Yesterday, Let it Be, and Hey Jude. Just before The Beatles broke up, McCartney released his first solo album and formed the band Wings, with wife Linda. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, he continued to record albums and set out on tour to support them.

In 1979, he was awarded a special disc for selling over 200 million albums. In March 1997, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and became known as Sir Paul McCartney. The Beatles were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and McCartney was inducted as a solo artist in 1999.
