Ozzy Osbourne was a member of the popular heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Along with Led Zeppelin, the two bands released their first albums in 1969. Sabbath's music was darker, heavier; while Zeppelin played a more folsky and bluesy variation of the new genre of music.

Together, the bands helped shape what went on to become heavy metal and hard rock music.

Sabbath's frontman was none other than Osbourne. Together they penned, recorded and released classic tracks like Paranoid, War Pigs, Iron Man, Children of the Grave and more.

Together (and separately), they also partaked in a dizzying level of drugs. As such, Osbourne was fighting his demons for most of his tenure in Sabbath. By 1980, the band, which included Geezer Butler on bass, Bill Ward on drums and Tony Iommi on guitar - had had enough and kicked Ozzy out.

Ozzy spent the next months cooped up in a hotel room, serving himself up a cocktail of coke and cocktails. Eventually, he met a woman named Sharon, who was his manager's daughter. She helped get him into a better state of mind and relaunched his career.

Osbourne interviewed numerous guitarists, and eventually "settled" for a young, lanky, blond, classically trained guitarist named Randy Rhoads. Rhoads brought a dimension to Ozzy's music that firmly positioned Ozzy as a great contributor to rock and roll music. From their first album, Blizzard of Ozz, Ozzy rocked while Randy rolled, with tracks like I Don't Know and Crazy Train. Their second album together , Diary of a Madman, was a bit more polished and delivered even more eye-opening tracks, like the title track and the mind numbing Over the Mountain, showcasing Rhoads' classical training.

Rhoads perished on March 19th 1982 in a plane crash.

But Ozzy persevered and found Jake E. Lee who helped Ozzy release Bark at the Moon and the Ultimate Sin. Differences between the two led to Lee's departure... after which Ozzy recruited Southern shredder Zakk Wylde. Wylde assisted Ozzy during Osbourne's most successful era, with albums No Rest for the Wicked, No More Tears and Ozzmosis.

After launching Ozzfest, Ozzy has chilled down a bit but remains the Godfather of Heavy Metal music.
