James
Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix
is still widely considered to be the
most
important electric guitarist in music
history. He had his own band in
1966, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames
and later formed The Jimi Hendrix
Experience with Noel Redding and Mitch
Mitchell. He gave us hits like “The
Wind Cries Mary”, “Hey
Joe”, and “Purple Haze”,
echoing his high volume and high energy
style of play.
When
The Jimi Hendrix Experience broke
up in 1969, he took to the Woodstock
stage with a new band, Gypsy Sun and
Rainbows. They quickly disbanded and
Band of Gypsys was formed soon after.
Unfortunately, Hendrix was one of
many artists to have emerged at a
young age, stand out from the rest,
and die young. Drugs and alcohol played
a part in his life and on the morning
of September 18, 1970, he was found
dead in a hotel room, reportedly overdosing
on sleeping pills, and leaving behind
more than 300 unreleased recordings.
Hendrix
mastered the electric guitar and had
a unique style that no one has been
able to replicate since. Although
he was left-handed, he played a right-handed
guitar that he turned upside down,
often favoring a Stratocaster.
