Johnny Cash mustered the courage to go to Sun Records and he eventually won over produce Cowboy Jack Clement and Sam Phillips. In 1955, his first releases were somewhat successful in the country realm. His next record, Folsom Prison Blues, made the top five and he had a number one hit with “I Walk the Line”.

In 1958, he signed with Columbia and released one of his biggest hits “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town”. Just when his career was taking off in the 60’s, he became addicted to barbiturates and amphetamines. He had his first crossover hit with “Ring of Fire”, on both the country and pop charts.

Over the next couple of years, he released two successful records, with another crossover hit “A Boy Named Sue”.

For two years starting in 1969, he starred in his own TV show and had such artists such as Neil Young, The Monkees, and Bob Dylan appear.

By the 70’s, he had an image of an imposing, tall figure, who always dressed in black, which earned him the nickname “The Man in Black”.

He became the youngest living inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980, when he was 48. And while his records weren’t making the impact of previous releases, his tours were still hot. In the mid-80’s, he teamed with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen and released two albums.

In 1986, he returned to Sun Records to help create the album “Class of ‘55” with Orbison, Lewis, and Perkins.

His career took off again in the 1990’s with his 1994 album which he recorded in his living room with only his guitar. He did versions of songs by modern artists like Danzig and Tom Waits which introduced a whole new audience to his talents. His album won the Grammy for Contemporary Folk Album of the Year in 1994.

He continued releasing albums and collecting Grammy’s. His wife June Carter passed away in May 2003 and less than four months later, Cash passed away at 71 due to complications from diabetes.
