In
the mid-1950’s, George
Harrison played lead guitar
in a band with Paul McCartney called
The Quarry Men which ultimately became
The Beatles. Through albums like Revolver,
Abbey Road, The White Album and Sgt.
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
The Beatles went on to become the
greatest band of all-time.
However, the bulk of the spotlight
shone on Harrison's bandmates John
Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Harrison built a close friendship
with Eric
Clapton in the 60’s and
also co-wrote the song “Badge”
on Cream’s album in 1969.
There was hostility
between Harrison and McCartney while
creating The White Album. Harrison
threatened to walk on several occasions
and, for a very brief time, he did
indeed quit the band. The Beatles
eventually split in 1970 and Harrison
went on to release several albums,
both as part of other groups and on
his own.
During the 90’s,
Harrison had an on-going battle with
cancer, being a former smoker. In
December 1999, he was attacked by
a crazed fan who managed to stab the
“Quiet Beatle” several
times in his own home.
He
died of lung cancer in 2001.
