Biography:

Wayne Douglas Gretzky was a Canadian hockey player considered to be the greatest player of all time.

He was taught how to play the game by his father and was playing with 10 year olds when he was 6. But he didn't just play, he dominated: notching 378 goals and 139 assists for 517 points in 85 games.

He joined the WHL in 1978 as an underaged player because it wasn’t allowed in the NHL. Gretzky had great success in the WHL but critics felt he wouldn’t do as well in the bigger, tougher NHL.

In his first season with the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL he proved the critics wrong and won the Hart Trophy as the MVP. Gretzky went on to hold or share 61 NHL records by the time of his retirement. He once reached 50 goals in only 38 games, going on to score 92 goals in a season. He holds the record for most points in a season, with 215. No other player has ever recorded 200 points.

In 1988, in his prime, he was traded to the LA Kings in what became known as “The Trade”, and some Canadians went so far as to call Gretzky a traitor. He exported hockey to the United States. Thanks to him, hockey expanded considerably afterwards.

His popularity sank but only temporarily as he continued all his successes with his new team. In 1990 the AP name him the athlete of the decade. Throughout his NHL career, Gretzky played with the Oilers, Kings, the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers.

After his playing career, he led Canada to its first Gold Medal victory in hockey after a fifty year drought at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

Today he is both minority owner and coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.
