Biography:

Russell Simmons is an entrepreneur and social icon as the co-founder of the hip hop record label Def Jam (along with Rick Rubin) and the founder of another label called Russell Simmons Music Group. Those 2 labels ended up being some of the many pillars of his Rush Communications corporation, which includes a management company and the Phat Farm clothing line, as well as a movie production company just to name a few.

He grew up in Queens and spent some of his youth as a street hustler. Eventually he enrolled at CCNY-Harlem and in his spare time began promoting hip hop acts and shows, when he finally hooked up with Rick Rubin, they created Def Jam and the rest was history.

His estimated net worth is around $500 million and he regularly contributes to civil rights movements and social justice efforts. While many usually think of Simmons as one of the most successful African American businessmen around, fact of the matter is that he ranks as one of the most successful men, period.

When you need to mobilize people, you can count on Mr. Simmons.
