Last Saturday Night, I went to see the Grand Burlesque show in the new “Cartier des Spectacles” at Club Soda. This was my second year attending Scarlett James‘ Burlesque-Variety-Vaudeville show and it’s been a couple of years since I was first introduced to the art of Burlesque.
For most of the audience there is a growing legitimacy for this Las Vegas inspired, sexy, glamorous and cheeky form of entertainment. With Christina Aguilera and Cher’s Hollywood appearance in a pop-cabaret interpretation of “Burlesque” the mainstream world has been (misleadingly) introduced to the “underworld’ of North American Burlesque. I even overheard a woman on the bus remarking as we passed by the Club Soda billboard that there was a “Burlesque show in Montreal. Just like that movie!” I hope she came to the show. And I hope she was shocked and appalled by the flagrant nudity on stage. Burlesque’s new Hollywood debut combined with the city of Montreal’s rebranding of the venue’s hood to a veritable “Quartier des Spectacles” gave a palatable legitimacy to the evening. The crowd seemed ready to take this shit seriously.
For this show, Scarlett James (producer and star) invited well-known Burlesque performers from across North America. The show was pitched as a trip by train around the globe on the “Burlesque Express.” Our “conductor,” Benjamin Marquis, was the charming MC in a top hat and a mischievous Pierrot-style clown’s face. He was such a delight that occasionally I caught myself getting excited for the moments between the acts as one would finish and he would appear on stage.
Still, the night had several highlights. The nerd in me really liked the iconic portraits of each exotic destination that were projected behind the performers to introduce their “train stop.” It made the whole experience more cinematic. More… BIG. Well, that and seeing BonBon Bombay descend on a hoop in the middle of the room while singing “Be Italian,” resplendent in a double-faced gold mask.
And then there was the live snake that the cartoonish-ly hot silhouette of Scarlett James held on stage in glowing blue light; this was a prelude to doing a number, which ended with her being hauled up to the naked North Pole in a chandelier bowl. No joke. I’m not sure how to explain the reptile connection to the faux snow that fell from the ceiling as Scarlett ascended at the end of the performance, but I’m not sure anyone watching was trying to make sense of the night’s spectacles anyhow.
A highlight of the festival included the sensual contortionist Andreane Leclerc do her thing – twisting in and out of herself – while Silvia Sabash played a kind of “Gypsy Music” on her guitar. The balance between Silvia’s music and Andreane’s movement was pitch-perfect and I felt like I was watching sculpture come to life with a folklore beat.
I also need to give a shout-out to the outrageously talented tap-dancing duo. Charismatic, stylish, and ‘quick on their feet’ (to say the least): I wish I could have set them up on a date with Fred Astaire. And props to girl who did silks in Shanghai with an incredible flexibility and beautiful breasts.
There were many other talented performers that evening from the audacious Renea’ Le Roux to the classic Gentry de Paris or the local Team Burlesque. And all of them turned in solid performances that are in line with past work I’ve seen from them. Google ‘em and you’ll get the picture.
See our video interview with Michelle L’amour and Renea Le Roux to get a picture of what they do:
However, the real show stopper for me was the performance by Michelle L’amour as a caged, purring, and lithe black panther. Wow. I mean, the girl embodied sexual tension in a way that transcended the limitations of performance. I mean, she wasn’t merely “putting on a show.” She was the show. She was the animal on stage, cuffed at the ankles, legs spread long in all different directions, ready to pounce at any moment. She climbed out of her cage and back in, toying with the audience the whole time. And there was a lingering smell of sex even after she left the stage, wearing only a paw-print on her lady-bits and some tiny pasties.
All in all, there were some great moments in the Grand Burlesque show and I think Scarlett did a fine job putting together a show with marquee names for all to see. If the average audience member had only the film “Burlesque” as a starting place to define the art, then this show was a fairly good eye-opener. If you live and breathe Burlesque and have gotten to see some of the neo-Burlesque that goes on in places like NYC, then this was more of a mainstream take on what can be a more subversively dangerous experience.
