While this industry first started gaining steam in the 1990s, since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 there has been a rising trend in volunteer vacations. Otherwise known as voluntourism, this type of travel has vacationers registering for charitable work while visiting their chosen location. Voluntourism opens people to new locales and experiences they may not otherwise encounter while traveling.
