Top Ten Most Popular Super Smash Bros. Characters

Gotta smash ‘em all! Welcome to and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 most popular SuperSmash Bros. characters.
For this list, we ranked your favorite characters from any of the Smash games, based on appeal to the series and popularity. We are not ranking them based on their effectiveness in tournaments, because everyone has their own unique style.

#10: Ness

Kicking off our list is a boy who’s short on size and long on abilities. First appearing in The SNES hidden gem EarthBound, he’s been kicking ass and taking names in Smash ever since the original N64 game. His long recovery times make him tough to learn how to use, but he’s become a favorite for players due to his powerful throws and vicious PK attacks.

#9: Mario

Don’t let his smile fool you, this guy is one tough fighter. The popular plumber was a Nintendo legend long before appearing in the first Smash game, but his combo ability and fast recovery times in the series have helped ensure his status. His strength on both offense and defense make him one of the most well-rounded Smash characters and a frequent choice for players.

#8: Pikachu

If his small stature and cute face make you think he’s weak, you’re in for a shock. This Pokemon is has been used by players in all three Smash games due to his stinging electricity attacks and surprisingly strong tail. His quick speed and recovery abilities make him a favored choice for those hoping to avoid damage.

#7: Marth

Though he lacks a projectile attack, this character’s wide array of moves with his sword have been winning over players since he appeared in Melee. He was relatively unknown to gamers before Smash, since Fire Emblem games weren’t published outside of Japan before 2003, but his ease of use made the outsider into a quick favorite. Who could argue with a blade this big?

#6: Fox McCloud

Commander of the Starfox team, and just like his ally Falco, Fox’s speed makes him tricky to hit. But it’s not like escaping is all he can do, as his reflector can knock back any projectile or item sent towards him if you’ve got the reflexes. Since the first Smash title, gamers have loved using him for his powerful combo abilities.

#5: Captain Falcon

Got a little captain in you? This character’s quickness and strength have made him a popular choice amongst Smash players since he showed up in the N64 version of the game, coming over from the F-Zero series. His move set is identical to Gannondorf’s though he favors speed over power, allowing for quick grabs with his Up-B attacks, and his signature Falcon Punch can be one of the most effective in the game, if timed right.

#4: Samus

When this Bounty Hunter isn’t committing genocide against deadly alien parasites, or blowing up planets singlehandedly, she’s blasting her foes away with mega firepower. That’s cause she’s armed to the teeth with 2 different types of missiles, a charge beam, a flame thrower and a grappling hook. She has the arsenal of a one-man army, and her screen filling final smash is the cherry on top of it all.

#3: Link

It’s not easy being green, but it’s even less easy to face off against this character. The swordsman’s valiant attempts to save Hyrule in highly acclaimed The Legend of Zelda series prepared him well for his first Smash appearance in the N64 title. The speed and range of his attacks have made him a go-to for players throughout the series. And just like Samus, he too has vast array of weaponry to really mess up his opponents.

#2: Kirby

With all of the great Smash characters, sometimes it’s hard to choose who to play with. This little marshmallow will make your decision a little easier, as his trademark Swallow move lets you use your opponent’s special moves. On top of that, he can make mince meat out of his opponents with moves like his Stone to crush them, and Final Cutter to dice them. Then finishes off his recipe by cooking them, anyone hungry?

Before we get to our number one, let’s take a look at some honourable mentions:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Ice Climbers
Zelda and Sheik

#1: Meta Knight

When a character’s so good that he’s been banned from competitions, it’s hard to imagine anyone else at the top of our list. His quick attack speed and four recovery moves make him nearly unbeatable. Even though he doesn’t have a projectile, players love the power of his Mach Tornado. He first showed up in Brawl after being pretty much Evil Kirby in the main Kirby series.
