SUCCESSOR
PLANNING
For all of my efforts to
realize a universal empire based on Greek
Civilization, The Macedonian Empire did
not last much past my death.
Was I surprised? Yes and
No.
I never cared much for
successor planning because I was not expecting
to die at such an early age. I did father
a child, partially explaining why I married
in the first place.
But even if I had expected
to leave this world for another, I would
have probably not changed anything. The
same way that I was the best man to seize
the throne after my father’s leadership,
I thought best to let the best man claim
the throne upon my death.
In the end, my one-time
glorious kingdom was immediately carved
up into several pieces by my generals. It
turned out that none of them possessed the
charisma and vision required for the job.
Had
they stuck together, they would have defended
against invaders. But they succumbed to
the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire as
well as the Turkish Empire.
Over twenty-two hundred years later, my
country was embroiled in even greater World
Wars and sliced up as part of a nation called
Yugoslavia, which itself went through a
period of hell I would not wish upon anyone
(well, Tyre, Thebes and Persepolis notwithstanding).
