A commercial, railway,
and manufacturing center, Chennai
was formerly known as Madras. Chennai
is the capital of the state of Tamil
Nedu and is the 4th largest city
in India. The
city is the 36 largest metropolitan
area of the world with a population
of 7.6 million.
Despite its
commercial aspects, Chennai is also
known for cultural heritage and temple
architecture. Its known as the automobile
capital of India, as 40 percent of
the countries operations are based
there. The cities east coast has
one of the longest beaches in the
world, called Marina Beach, at 12
kilometers long. Another interesting
fact is that it has become a major
center for outsourced jobs from the
Western world. Its proximity to the
equator and the sea give Chennai
a hot and humid climate all year
round.
