| DAKAR,
SENEGAL |
 |
City:
Dakar
Country: Senegal
As the capital and largest city
of Senegal, it is the administrative,
communications, and economic center.
The population of the entire metropolitan
area surrounding Dakar is 2.4 million
and about 1 million live in the actual
city. Initially formed around
a French Fort, Dakar then grew as a
port and railway hub, and then later
became a naval base. The city is a
commune, and one of 67 communes of
Senegal. The commune of Dakar has been
in continuous existence since 1887
and has been preserved since their
independence in 1960. Attractions include
the major markets, and the Dakar Grand
Mosque built in 1964.
