It’s no secret that I have an unnatural love for the Angry Video Game Nerd and his Cinemassacre website/YouTube Channel. In this Nerd video he tackles a subject near and dear to my heart, confusing and downright dumb sequel naming conventions.
Enjoy, this is one wild ride that flies by extremely fast!
I’m a huge fan of old-school gaming. And I find Strong Bad’s fictional fan replies pretty amusing (coincidentally, my internal monologue is the exact same voice). Here’s what he imagines himself like as a retro game.
This is for you Taylor! Get out soon buddy!
Check out WatchMojo.com’s coverage of the PlayStation 3’s most highly-anticipated video game.
Overall video game industry sales are down 15 percentage points, with the Xbox 360 dethroning the Nintendo Wii and BioShock 2 continuing to dominate the game sales on Microsoft’s console.
But what caused this overall gaming slump? Well I have an idea…higher video game price tags! Have you noticed that games have been coming out for about $20 more then they used to? It’s crazy. I wouldn’t pay more then $15 for a movie (whether or not it’s blu ray) and I certainly won’t pay more then $50 for a video game. In fact, I generally spend between $10-$40 for my gaming pleasures. I simply don’t care if it means waiting a month for a used copy….afterall, I do need to fill my gas tank.
Anyhoo, let’s take a look at the February 2010 hardware sales breakdown (with growth compared to the same time last year):
613k - Nintendo DS (-4%)
422k - Xbox 360 (+8%)
397k - Wii (-47%)
360k - PlayStation 3 (+30%)
133k - PSP (-33%)
102k - PlayStation 2 (-63%)…who still buys this?!?
So what does this all mean? Well first, Nintendo’s Wii is falling off a cliff while screaming and reaching for a ledge, Microsoft and especially Sony’s PS3 are doing better then before (Due to price cuts and the New PS3 Slim). The Nintendo DS is about the same, got to wonder how the DSi XL will do…remember the GBA Micro…Epic fail!
Also, in February the Xbox 360 took the top spot (dethrowing the Wii) for hardware sales. This top-spot grab has been its first since Halo 3’s release way back in September 2007.
Here’s the February 2010 game sales report:
563k - BioShock 2 (Xbox 360)
556k - New Super Mario Bros. (Wii)
314k - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360)
275k - Just Dance (Wii)
273k - Sports Resort w/Wii Motion Plus (Wii)
253k - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
247k - Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360)
243k - Dante’s Inferno (PS3)
225k - Dante’s Inferno (Xbox 360)
219k - Heavy Rain (PS3)
Notice that this is the first time first time in its three-year lifespan that the PS3 has three games on the chart…. PS3 is starting to get its game on!
However, the PS3 version of BioShock 2 didn’t make the top 10, despite respectable sales. (187k compared with 563k for the Xbox 360). Industry pundits believe that it’s a result of the original 2007 game releasing exclusively for the Xbox 360 (and remained an exclusive for a year). Strangely, the 2008 PS3 version of the first game then went on to only sell a fifth as many copies.
And check this out: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now officially the third bestselling game ever, with nearly 10 million copies bought so far. Wild!
