Here’s a bit of fluffy news for the morning. According to the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service, The PS3 is still set to win the console war and make good on its ten year console lifespan promise.

The report forecasts the PS3 eventually hitting 127 million global sales. This is compared to the Wii with 103 million sales….and Microsoft somewhere behind that.

Here’s what the principal industry analyst David Mercer had to say:

“Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences. But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014”.

So basically this backs up Sony’s pledge of a 10 year console lifespan. However, I for one would be willing to trade in my Wii and Xbox 360 for newer advanced versions when the time comes (2016 is pretty far away)….but this is on the assumption that they are 100% backwards compatible, worth an upgrade and their cost is low enough.

Or Microsoft can buy out Nintendo Like I’ve wanted for some time now…

As for the main feature that I think is keeping the PS3 afloat, the all-mighty blu ray. Though I think it’s odd that people don’t invest in a dedicated player that costs under half of Sony’s console (I picked up a blu ray player for $80 bucks at Xmas). Plus, dedicated players use a fraction of the electricity and who wants to put lens ware on their home console?

But that’s just my stance…how do you feel? Will the PS3 dominate? Should it last until 2016 as Sony suggests?
