Once the bastion for intolerance, The Xbox 360 Console and its live service will no longer be censoring (or in some extreme cases banning people) who identify themselves as Gay or Transgendered.
In the beginning the ideology was to have a neutral online gaming environment. And on the surface it makes sense to want to protect people from other bigoted people. However, Microsoft has finally realized that it can’t baby or nanny everyone and that gamers are proud of their sexual orientation.
Here’s the official statement by Xbox Live boss Marc Whitten:
“I’d like to announce an update to the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and Code of Conduct which will allow our members to more freely express their race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation in Gamertags and profiles.”
“Under our previous policy, some of these expressions of self-identification were not allowed in Gamertags or profiles to prevent the use of these terms as insults or slurs. However we have since heard feedback from our customers that while the spirit of this approach was genuine, it inadvertently excluded a part of our Xbox LIVE community.”
And in case you’re wondering, this decision came as a result of a meeting between the gaming giant and the Gay and Lesbian alliance Against Deformation.
