Nintendo has never felt as vulnerable as they do right now. Just look at their faces! And it’s all thanks to an expanding portable gaming competitor. But who is scaring the pants off of the Big N? Is it Sony, Microsoft or someone fruitier scarier…

Well the answer has been starring you in your iFace, Apple has already entered the gaming market!… Albeit with a slow and calculated strategy. They never really threw their hat into the ring like everyone normally does…but guess what, they’re here and they have already bloodied their boxing gloves.

I’m not really shocked by this revelation. The only other solid portable competitor has been Sony. Yet, despite their PSP having always been vastly superior, it hasn’t been able to hold Nintendo down. Somehow the house of Mario always manages to tickle their way out of a confrontation on the grounds of innovation, mascots and family friendly fun…

However, with the lastest tech announcement regarding their upcoming DS 2 release…it seems that Nintendo isn’t prepared to take any more low-tech chances.

New developer reports tell us that the rumored DS sequel may incorporate an advanced tilt sensor. The buzz is that it’s like the iPhone’s sensor… but can do a lot more.

Developers lucky enough to get early prototypes have so far been providing positive feedback, with one even saying that “It’s genuinely the best thing I think I’ve ever worked with.”

Sources haven’t provides any specific timeframes for a DS 2 launch, but hint that we might see the device at E3 this June.

This only confirms speculation that Nintendo is unofficially planning for an aggressive replacement of the DS and DSi. In addition to changing internal hardware, so that they can compete with the iPhone and Ipod Touch’s gaming abilities.

Nintendo’s six-year-old handheld is starting to really show its age…its significantly less powerful and outputs lower resolutions on it’s dual-screen displays. Plus, Ds games are more expensive. A typical DS game costs consumers around $40, where as Apple’s downloadable titles cost gamers around $10

If you ask me, it sounds like Nintendo might ditch retail games and take a page out of Apple/PSP Go’s playbook (hopefully with much better results then Sony).
