Apathy is for losers. Fine, you don’t have time to start a charity or fight Jack [Thompson], then let your work do the talking. Your collective creative output is the real ambassador that touches millions on a global basis. Games have the ability to transform the world. Don’t lose sight of that. You create culture. We ARE culture.
Like it or not, you are all already ambassadors for games. So, better make the most of that responsibility! Award or not, I can’t ever do that for you.

In the middle of a week full of earning reports from gamemakers–including Sony, Nintendo, Capcom, and Electronic Arts–THQ today opened up its financial books. For the quarter ending June 30, 2008, the company posted net earnings of $137.6 million, $33.1 more than what it took in a year ago.
THQ’s increased earnings came in very large part to its game based on WALL-E, the critically acclaimed computer-animated film from Pixar. Released for the Mac, PC, DS, PSP, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3, the game sold over a million copies as of the end of June, despite receiving only middling reviews. Read more…

David Braben may have warned that the UK is the most expensive place in the world to make games, but this year’s Develop awards showed that the country has no shortage of talent. Grand Theft Auto IV developer Rockstar North led the pack with awards for visuals, audio, and in-house development, and parent company Rockstar Games took the overall grand-prix prize. Other notable winners included best use of a license for Traveller’s Tales with Lego Indiana Jones, and Nintendo won the publishing-hero award. Read more…
