Canada is home to a large quantity of oil sands, otherwise known as tar sands. It is only recently that these particular oil reserves became available to the world, because of the intense effort and energy expenditure required to mine it. Enormous amounts of water are also required to mine the tar sands, and so fresh water reserves in the area are dwindling.
