Footage of the Chinese broadcast
I hate traffic, but imagine having to sit in a jam for longer than a week?!
That’s what happened on August 14th in China. A never before seen, traffic jam spanning more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) forced drivers to call into work late…for nine days.
The problem was caused by highway construction, but accidents and broken-down vehicles added to the chaos of it all.
Adding to the drivers’ annoyance, some “entrepreneurs” took advantage of the situation by gouging food prices. According to Time, one truck driver complained that vendors were selling instant noodles for ‘four times the original price while I wait in the congestion.’
Approximately 400 police officers were on duty all day to make sure everything stayed under control. Most of the drivers played games of cards and chess to help pass the time.
