
So here’s one story: In 2007, this woman was flying with her two kids. The kids started to fight. This fight caused the woman’s Bloody Mary to be spilled in her lap. The woman then spanked her children each three times on the thigh. The flight attendant confronted the woman, who swore and threw her tomato juice can on the floor. This was defined as an act of terrorism under the Patriot Act and the woman was arrested and convicted (she even spent three months in jail).
Over 200 people have been convicted under the Patriot Act, a controversial amendment brought about by the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City. None of these people, however, have ever actually been trying to hijack a plane - most simply involved raised voices, foul language and drunken behavior (one couple was arrested for “overt sexual activity,” that made other passengers uncomfortable).
