The Montreal Canadiens made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last year; this year they were eliminated in the first round, but if you ask the players on the team, they will tell you that they are closer to the Stanley Cup championship than they were last year despite the first round elimination. continue reading...
Sure, when Bob Gainey traded for the $8 million-a-year player Scott Gomez, I wondered if it was a wise move, but the fact is, I have loved the deal ever since… I don’t care what Gomez does or doesn’t do in the playoffs. In last night’s highly anticipated matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins things took an ugly turn when Boston’s monstrous defenceman Zdeno Chara drove Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty’s head into the turn-buckle between the two teams’ benches. Pacioretty was immediately knocked unconscious and lay face first on the ice for mutiple minutes without any movement. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that the Montreal Canadiens would need a Patrick Roy-esque performance to upset the #1 ranked Washington Capitals. The series is not going to Game 7 where anything can happen, in large part thanks to Jaroslav Halak’s 54-save performance; Halak gave up one goal on the Caps’ 52nd shot but by then the Habs were up 3-0, going on to win the game 4-1.
Red Fisher - who has covered the Montreal Canadiens, since, well, forever - suggested that Halak’s performance was the second greatest display he has seen from a Montreal goaltender since Roy’s 1986 heroics against the NY Rangers. From Mike Wise’s Washington Post article: continue reading...
