It was a combination of the Vancouver Olympics, Cheryl Bernard, the “Vancougar” Canadian team captain, and the Norwegians’ now-famous brightly coloured Argyll-patterned trousers that has brought the sport into the public’s attention.

Originating in the United States, Roller Derby is a fairly brutal contact sport played on roller skates.  The sport received mainstream success and increased legitimacy between the 1930s and 1970s, with games eventually being broadcast on television.  However the sport petered out at that point, only to be revived decades later.  Contemporary teams are primarily composed of females, and most are self-organized grass-roots leagues. continue reading...
