The Montreal Canadiens finally showed some fear and respect for the Boston Bruins… and they went on to win Game 7 in front of a loud 21,000+ fans.
Going in, the stats were not kind either way, historically Bruins’ fans could not help but feel that the odds were against them, according to HabsInsideOut:
• The Canadiens face Game 7 for the 19th time in their playoff history and for the first time when they have led a series by a 3-1 games advantage.
• The Bruins face Game 7 for the 17th time in their playoff history and for the first time when they have trailed 3-1.
• In 26 times having led a series 3-1, the Canadiens have never lost. In 20 times trailing a series 3-1, the Bruins have never won.
• Montreal is 10-8 all-time in seventh games, 7-3 on home ice.
• Boston is 9-7 all-time in seventh games, 0-3 on the road.
However, as the saying goes: there’s always a first. Tack on the fact that the Bruins had come back from a 3-1 deficit, and Habs fans were not very confident either.
With captain Saku Koivu back in the lineup and showing his value in Game 6, you expected the Habs to surge with a full lineup tonight, and they did. Ultimately the Habs proved too strong for the Bruins… but if that puck does not bounce off a Bruins defender and past Tim Thomas for the game’s first goal, let’s face it, this game could have gone the other way.
Then again, rookie goalie Carey Price stood tall and earned his second shutout of the first series… and right now the Canadiens are awaiting either the New York Rangers or the Philadelphia Flyers. Right now, I’d guess Habs fans prefer the Flyers (whom the Habs went 4-0 against this year) but then again, who knew the Bruins (who only got 1 tie or overtime loss in 8 games) would fight to see Game 7?
God I love this sport…
