Would you be willing to pay 100$ for every helium balloon for your next birthday party?

According to scientists our non-renewable source of helium is starting to run out and could be completely gone in 100 years.

They believe that charging 100$ would help because the experts feel that the supply and demand issues and artificially low prices are the reason we’re in this mess in the first place.

Supply outpaces the demand from companies that use helium for scientific and technological applications, which helps keep prices low, according to Gawker.com .

Nobel laureate Robert Richardson, who won his prize for work with helium-3, believes the price for helium should rise by between 20- and 50-fold, reported The Independent .

To better reflect the value of helium, Richardson believes helium-filled party balloons should cost around $100 each.

“As a result of that Act, helium is far too cheap and is not treated as a precious resource,” he said. “It’s being squandered.”

Richardson and other experts say one way to stem the loss is for the U.S. government to revisit and reconsider that policy. Their views are in a recently published report on the shortage, convened by the U.S. National Research Council, part of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
