What a fantastic band name. Sometimes you hear a band name and wonder how in the hell it was never chosen earlier? Heartless Bastards are a hardworking band out of Cincinnati, Ohio with 3 albums under their belt, but have slowly been finding an audience. Based on the hooky, rootsy and rollicking first single “Parted Ways”, new album Arrow should continue to speed things up. continue reading...
I’m easily swayed to post anything Gorillaz-related, but this one is pretty fun. The Converse musical collaboration project is a marketing gimmick, but a fairly cool and well executed marketing gimmick. These do not happen often. This tune called “DoYaThing” is essentially a Gorillaz track featuring additional vocals from James Murphy and Andre 3000. It’s not spectacular, but it’s a decent track made all the better with a kickass accompanying video featuring everyones favorite cartoon band in their living quarters. When the hell are we going to get a Gorillaz feature length or TV show?? Enjoy: continue reading...
Justin Vernon has had a pretty massive month… Jamming with the Roots on Fallon, performing on SNL and ultimately winning two Grammy awards that he never even really wanted to win. After it all, the thing that has impressed me to most is this 5 song session he completed with bandmate Sean Carey for 4AD/Jagjaguwar. Just the two of them at grand pianos, sitting across from each other and playing reworked versions of Bon Iver tunes (and one Bonnie Raitt cover). No 12-piece band, none of the grandiosity and complexity that made Bon Iver such a spectacular album, and yet, the songs remain just as captivating. Great stuff. Enjoy: continue reading...
In this edition of the Flashback I’m jumping back to 1971 to a performance by a young Joe Walsh and his James Gang band. Now known primarily for his work with The Eagles, Joe Walsh had quite a successful early career with The James Gang and as a solo artist. There’s not much available online, but luckily this video exists and captures the power trio in a great performance of their moderate hit “Walk Away”. There’s something special about the power trio setup. One Guitar, one bass, drums and vocals… Not much wiggle room, especially when playing hard rock. This band was great at it. Enjoy: continue reading...
