Diamond Rings is the side project of John O’Regan, lead singer for the Toronto based band The D’Urbervilles. The sound is a synth-y, electro-pop sound that is as heavy on drum machines as it is on hooks. O’Regan seems to be trying to distance himself from his regular band, but the music never suffers and might even be a better outlet for his talents. The debut album is called Special Affections and is an entertaining and promising listen from start to finish. The vocal style immediately recalls Ian Curtis from Joy Division, but it never took anything away from the music, at least for me. It should be interesting to see which of O’Regan’s band outlasts which. For this week’s Mp3 I’ve chosen “Something Else”, which will tell you everything you need to know about this artist.
